Project history

Enlarged version of type 051, Type 052. Originally planned to be fitted with US weapons and equipment, and LM-2500 gas turbines were exported to China for this class. Helicopter deck and hangar aft, and gun mounts are of a new enclosed type. Following the 1989 embargo, class was limited by only two units. Really they became first modern Chinese surface combatants. Have an unusual high freeboard. Are air-conditioned and have a full NBC warfare protection system. Hull has two sets of non-retractable fin stabilizers. A twin hangar and a French-designed SAMAHE harpoon-type recovery and dual deck traversing system are fitted for the helicopters.
