Ship project history: Some kind of the world record-holder of "long-term building": building of this ship lasted 50 years! She was laid down in 1890 as Maranhao, second monitor of Pernambuco class. In 1900s building was suspended, and re-commenced only in late twenties. 11/6/1931 ship was launched under name Vitoria, but then it has been decided to complete her under changed project. Hull was again lifted on a shipway, cut along a centre line, having increased breadth by 3.3m; armour protection was cardinally moderated, armament was completely changed, and turret was refused in favour of deck shielded mounts, only machinery remained unchanged. Monitor was repeatedly launched 28/12/1938 already under new name Paraguassu.

Ship protection: Hull had bullet-proof protection.
