This design was the winner of a competition between the submarine yard of Stabilimento Tecnico, the newly named Austriawerft, and UBAG. The A 6 type designation indicates that the previous projects A 1-A 5 were rejected. U52 was about 25% complete at the end of the war, U53 about 10%; both were broken up in 1919. Sisterboats U54 and U55 were never laid down.
