Project history

Similar to the Lazarev class but with two turrets and heavier armour.

Ship protection

The side armour was complete, and at designed draught extended from 1.7m above wl to 1.5m below. There was no armour deck.

Modernizations

1874, both: - 2 x 2 - 229/17; + 2 x 1 - 279/17 obr. 1867

1870s, Admiral Chichagov: - 2 x 1 - 279/17; + 2 x 1 - 279/18 obr. 1877

1887, Admiral Chichagov; 1904, Admiral Spiridov: were reboilered with 4 cylindrical boilers
